On Deadly Ground - Last stands at their best

The fantastic thing about themed anthologies is that you can take a single concept and yet see it go off in numerous crazy ways. I’d like to introduce you to On Deadly Ground. Ten of us got together under the amazing wings of JR Handley and wrote some thrilling tales.

I’m really proud of my contribution, Contours of War, and I reckon you’ll love it. Almost certain death. Intrigue. Incredible stakes. And space! For those who have read The Last Cruise Ship, I’ll give you a little something to ponder. This is written in the same universe, but not at the same point in time.

Blurb

A navy destroyer, shorthanded and unprepared.

An invading fleet of AI controlled warships.

The last souls of an interstellar nation at stake.

Captain Alice Decker of the Southern Federation Navy is ordered to abandon her comrades as they fight and die. Her mission: evacuate a VIP. But the drop off is a bust—all she finds are refugees guarded by a small squadron long overdue for decommissioning. And that’s the good news. An overwhelming enemy is coming. If Decker can’t get the civilians to safety, the nation she swore to protect will cease to exist.

On Deadly ground cover. Scene of small spaceships battling against the background of a massive ship.

Across a thousand battlefields and a million wars, there is always a question. What do you do when all the chips are on the table? Do you run? Try to find salvation in the arms of an easy peace? Or do you stand and fight? Send your enemies into whatever hole they crawled out of? On Deadly Ground has ten stories handling that exact question. Each character faces the impossible in different ways, but all will be tested before the day is done. Can they earn a heroic victory amongst the endless eternity of space, or are they doomed to fall into obscurity?
